Thanks Paula

Hey everyone.  Well I got home today from work and flipped on the television and there was Paula Deen.  Of course I sat down and watched.  I think I have seen this episode many times, but I needed my Paula fix.  Somehow,  when I watch Paula Deen I feel like I am back in my mom or grandma’s kitchen.

Right now I kind of needed that fix.  My grandmother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  As you’ll notice, there are now pink ribbons on my header at the top of my blog.  Unfortunately, this horrible disease runs in our family.  With the loss of my aunt, and my mom having a lump removed years ago, and now my grandma having to go through this terrible time, I fear for all the wonderful ladies in my family.  I sit here 1000 miles away and unable to do anything but call her daily and talk to her and my mom.  She’s staying with mom right now, and I am so happy for this.  She shouldn’t be alone at a time like this.

So I am watching Paula Deen, and what does she make?  Swiss Steak.  This was one of my favorite things mom made when I was growing up.  So after a few tears, and commercials I headed to the store to get some chopped steak.  I put it all together the way mom used to, and let it simmer on the stove in my cast iron dutch oven for about 2 hours.  Let me tell you.  It fell apart just removing it from the pan.  So tender and delicious.  I did add about 3 tablespoons of tomato paste.  I like mine a little more rich than Paula’s recipe.  More like the way mom made it.

Its amazing the comfort I got from watching Paula make this meal, and then doing it myself.  Took me right back to my childhood.  A lot of you may laugh at me, but Paula Deen has a way of bringing you into her family and making you feel like you’re with your own.  Thanks Paula, for always bringing back memories.  Now its time to call grandma and mom.
