Diabetic & Heart Healthy

Well for anybody who knows me, I love food.  I love cooking it, I love eating it, I love sharing it.  If you know me you also know that a short time back I had a little heart attack.  Nothing to great, heck I drove myself to the doctors office.  Yes I know, I should have dialed 911 and all that, but remember I am a respiratory therapist and we make the worst patients.  I did have a stress test and all that fun stuff and found out it was due to my having apnea.  I also had high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  The blood pressure I can blame on the apnea, but the cholesterol not so much.  I have tried to change my diet around somewhat now, I don’t eat as much of all those good things I make.  My portions are smaller and I don’t snack as much, but now the whole heart thing is back in my face.  NOT me, but my step father.  He had a heart attack at work and ended up having a stint put in and bypass surgery.  He is doing fine and the doctors said there was no permanent heart muscle damage.  That we have to be thankful for.  But, and this is a big but, he has to change his diet.  Now let me tell you what, if there is a man who loves food more than me, at least the eating part, its him.  So I have decided to come up with some recipes that mom can make to help him through all this.  I hope these recipes also help anyone else out there with similar issues.

So please, if you have a heart healthy recipe, feel free to share it with me so I can share it with everyone on my site.  And for all those people out there like me, watch what you eat and take care of your heart.  I hope you still enjoy the other recipes on my site if your health allows, and remember, moderation is a big key to your diet.  The other is exercise.  Yes, my doctor keeps telling me about that exercise thing.  I’ve even seen news articles about it on TV and read articles on the internet, yet I still can’t get myself to do it.  Oh well, I guess I better start listening, because now my mom is on my case about my eating habits.

So here we go with some recipes that are good for your heart.  I am going to try to include the nutritional facts as well with each recipe.  Some I have been finding on the internet and some are from my recent visit to the American Heart Association doing some detective work on this whole healthy eating thing.   I will continuously add new recipes as I find or create them.  You can keep checking back on this pager or also just search the Heart Healthy section as well.

  1. DH and I are both on low sodium diets, but fortunately our cholesterol is fine. I get completely frustrated that so called “heart healthy” diets are low in fat but overloaded in sodium. I agree that moderation, as well as avoiding processed foods are the key to healthy eating. Thank you for the great site.
