Cades Cove – Great Smoky Mountains – Tennessee

Y’all, if you have never been to the Great Smoky Mountains, you are missing out on one of this countries greatest treasures.  Hidden on the western side in Tennessee you will find Cades Cove.  It is a valley surrounded by the Smokies and is one of the most popular destinations in the National Park.  It is famous for the wildlife including bears, elk, deer, wild turkeys and now panthers.

There is an 11-mile one way loop that travels around the cove which is usually jammed pack with motorists who are leisurely making their way through the countryside.  It will take about 2-4 hours at a slow pace, sometimes up to 6 hours depending on how many “Bear-Jams” there are.  Remember though, stay back at least 50 yards from the wildlife.  They can be dangerous and even deadly.

There are many old cabins and homesites along the way, my favorite is the “Primitive Baptist Church”.  When we went this last time there was a lovely couple who brought some musical instruments and were singing old gospel songs. (see video 3)  It literally brought tears to my eyes.

So enjoy my pictures and videos of our trip and please make sure you put Cades Cove on your bucket list of must see destinations.  I promise you will not be disappointed.

  1. Miss it. Used to bike around the cove on a Saturday, not sure they close it off for bicyclists anymore. Beautiful, and intersting to think our ancestors, or at least mine, did so much with so little, but the land supplied them well.
