Cubed Steaks with Onion Gravy

This was one of the meals my mom and grandma Jean would make that was in no way fancy, but it was always such a comfort meal.  Piled on top of mashed potatoes so the gravy streamed down into them as well.  I have days when I just crave this comfort food from my childhood.  It always takes me back to moms kitchen when I was young.  It is amazing how food can have such a connection to memories and comfort.

Ingredients:

  • 6 cubed beef steaks (4 ounces each)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 large thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cooking sherry
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the cubed steaks and onion in the oil until steaks are nicely browned, about 4 minutes per side. Remove the cubed steaks to a plate, and keep warm.

Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in flour with a wooden spoon, scraping bits of beef off of the bottom as you stir. Gradually mix in the beef broth and sherry.  Season with seasoned salt, garlic powder and pepper. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.

Turn heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer for another 15 minutes.

Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.
