I discovered this absolutely amazing treat on my last visit home to Ohio. Linda, who is one of our families dearest friends brought me this treat on one of my evenings while at my mothers home. I popped open the container to find a number of pieces of this frozen delight. I was trying to decide how to make them all my own, but in the end I did find myself sharing them.
Linda told me that her grandmother always had a tray of these in the freezer for her family and guests. It seemed that her grandmothers freezer was to become the holder of this family’s treasured and sought after recipe. I have become one of the few that it has been shared. With her permission, I am now sharing it with you all.
I of course kept true to the recipe the first time I made this ice cream dessert. Those of you who know me and have followed my blog know that I will continue to treasure this recipe in its originality, but will soon be using this base recipe to develop many other versions. I am thinking chocolate (come on, y’all knew I’d go there first), maybe some caramel or even fresh seasonal berries. Who knows what I will develop? I will of course share any new combinations I come up with. Until then, I will continue making and tasting the various combinations, for all of you of course.
Linda’s’ “Grandma’s Ice cream Dessert”
- 1 stick of butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
Pour over:
- 2 cups crushed Rice Chex cereal
- 1/2 cup nuts, chopped
Reserve 3/4 cup crumbs. Press remaining crumbs into a 13×9 baking pan. Spread 1/2 gallon softened vanilla ice cream on top of the crumb mixture. Cover with reserved crumbs and place back in freezer to re-harden. Enjoy.
