Molasses Cookies

My great aunt Lizzy used to make these for me all the time.  Anytime I was visiting grandma and grandpa Miracle we would end up at her house.  Growing up I always related ginger bread cookies and these molasses cookies with her.  These are so simple, and a great spicy cookie treat.  Y’all have to give these a try.

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger

Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.  Stir beaten eggs and molasses.  Sift flour, soda, salt and spices.  Add to creamed mixture.  Stir until blended.  Chill in refrigerator for 2 hours. Shape in small balls, dip top in sugar and put the sugarless side on your prepared cookie sheet.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 375degrees
