Tennessee Honey Whiskey Mango BBQ Sauce

For all y’all that know me.  Know that I love to BBQ and especially smoke meats.  Some weekends you will find both my smokers going and the grill as well.  Most of the time I like the simple flavor of the seasoned meats along with the touch of smoke coming from a long slow smoke.  There are occasions when I want a bit of an extra flavor or tang added to my meats.

Today was one of those days.  After firing up the smokers, I went around the yard and picked up some mango’s that had fallen off the trees overnight.  Since moving to Fort Lauderdale I have fallen in love with this amazing fruit.  I like the fact that the varieties I have growing have a cross taste of a peach and a bit of citrus.  Fresh off the tree or in a number of recipes you will find here on my food blog, these tropical gems have become one of my favorite fruits.

So having an abundance of mango’s, I decided to utilize them in a new BBQ sauce that could be used over a variety of meats.  Heck, after tasting it, I was eating it right of the spoon dip after dip.  I wanted to add another flavor profile to this BBQ sauce so I grabbed my new favorite whiskey “Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey®” and knocked this sauce up a notch or two.  The sweetness of this whiskey along with the slight tang of the mango’s delivered an amazing light taste that doesn’t take over the flavors of the meat it is utilized on.

So here’s my recipe for Tennessee Honey Whiskey Mango BBQ Sauce.

  • 1 sweet onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (diced)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup Tennessee Honey Whiskey (I prefer Jack Daniels®)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 large mango’s diced (or peaches if you don’t have mango’s)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 tablespoons cold brewed coffee
  • 4 tablespoons spicy mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper
  1. Add the onion and garlic to a sauce pan and saute on low till translucent.  Watch so you don’t burn the garlic
  2. Add remaining ingredients to sauce pan, mix well and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and using an immersion blender, blend till smooth. (you can pour into a blender as well, but be careful blending hot sauces they do expand and can pop the lid off the blender.  If you do this, hold a towel over the top of blender lid to keep it from popping off)
  4. Simmer over medium low heat to thicken
  5. Enjoy your sauce on your favorite meats.
