Easter Egg Deviled Eggs

Easter has got to be one of my childhood favorite holidays. Not just due to the Easter baskets we always got, but the time with family. We always spent Easter morning running around looking for hidden eggs at home. Mom and dad always made sure the “Easter Bunny” had come way before our little feet hit the floor that morning. Then we got to go to “The Farm” to grandma Jeans and grandpa Norms. I still laugh to this day when I remember my grandpa hiding the eggs in the house on a rainy day. We all were supposed to act like we didn’t see them till he said it was time to hunt. Of course then it was off to Findlay to see grandma Cortie and grandpa Cecil. Of course at both of these places all my aunts and uncles and especially my cousins where there to make the day seem so extra special.

So I carried my hidden Easter eggs memories over to my Easter dinner. Now I have the memories right at the dinner table every Easter in a new form. My Easter Egg Deviled Eggs. Now of course you can stuff them with whatever filling recipe you love. Make them your own and share your childhood memories as an adult.

I used a food grade food coloring gel that is FDA-approved and will not change the taste or texture of your eggs. The link is below and I get it on Amazon.

I have been seeing these in others peoples food blogs a lot this past year.  So I decided its time to try them myself.  They are quite easy to do, and your friends and family are going to love them.

First, put your eggs in cold water, place on the stove and bring to a boil.  Immediately once boiling begins, remove from heat and let sit for 20 minutes in the hot water to continue cooking.

Once your eggs are cooked, remove from water and let cool. Once cooled, its time to have some fun.  Roll and tap your eggs on the counter or cutting board.  You are trying to make as many cracks in the shell as you can.  the more you make the better the eggs will look.  I smashed mine down gently, then rolled them across the cutting board, crackling it the whole time.  Don’t forget to do the tops and bottoms too.

Now fill a few bowls or glasses like I did with cold water and a bit of the food coloring gel. (You can use about 10 drops of traditional food coloring in each if you prefer).  Make sure you mix them well.

Now drop your eggs into the colored water and place them in the refrigerator over night.  You want them to have plenty of time to absorb the coloring into the cracks.

The next morning, just peel your eggs and you will find beautifully crackled hard boiled eggs.

Once cut and filled with your favorite deviled eggs filling, you have a beautiful side dish to highlight on your Easter table.

  1. Eggs should never be boiled, protein gets tough when boiled … bring the water to boiling, but don’t let it get to a rapid boil, take off the heat and let sit for 15 minutes, any longer and you could end up with that nasty, ugly green ring around the yolk. After the 15 minutes is up, immediately cover them with ice water to stop the cooking process. Cute idea, just make sure you’re using food safe coloring, or better yet, natural dyes!

  2. Do they have to sit over night?

  3. Meagan, They have to sit over night so the color can seep into the egg through the cracks.

  4. Do you add vinegar to the water/dye mix in the cups to set the dye? Or does the overnight time set it good enough?
